I think a lot of it is just the actors that they cast. David Taylor (the first Solan actor, in "Hooves and Harlots") has more than a passing resemblance to Lucy Lawless, and actually his ash-blonde hair is about the same color as Lucy's natural color.

But that's rare that you can find actors who actually resemble each other physically to play family members - Luke and Leia in Star Wars look nothing like each other, for example, and not really anything like Natalie Portman either. Gabrielle only vaguely resembled Lila in the broadest sense (both Renee and Willa O'Neill have pale skin and sort of large ears, and that's about it) and neither looked like their parents, and Virgil certainly looked nothing like Joxer or Meg.

Hercules has medium-brown hair though, Kevin Sorbo's natural color.

But most significantly, Xena's fling with Hercules was just a year and a half or so before we first saw Solan. Solan was born ten years earlier, when Borias and Xena were together.

Of course, Borias had dark hair...but that was a wig - Marton Csokas actually has very light brown hair.

It's actually not that complicated, I promise. All of the flashbacks were before she got kicked out of her army (which was the plot of the last two eps of the first season of Hercules, so that they could set up the spin-off for the next season.)

She got pregnant while she was with Alti, and that's when we saw Alti curse her as-yet-unborn child while she was asleep.

But it was 8 or 9 or 10 years later that she met Hercules (doesn't really matter how many - if Solan was five, then it was five years later, if Solan was 15, then it was 15 years later, but she said ten, and he looked about 10.)
